This American Fur Company trading post was built on the left bank of the Yellowstone River about five miles below the mouth of Rosebud Creek to replace Fort Alexander 1. This post catered to the Crow Indian trade and was operated by Robert Melfrum. Fort Alexander 2 was abandoned and burned in May 1855 and was replaced by Fort Sarpy 2.
