This was the largest military post in Montana, established on May 9, 1879 by Colonel Thomas H Ruger. It was located on Beaver Creek about four miles from the Milk River. It was intended to prevent the return of Sitting Bull and his followers from Canada and to control bands of Blackfeet in the area. The post was closed on July 25, 1911 and turned over to the Department of Interior. It became a USDA Agriculture Experiment Station in 1913 and most of the original buildings were torn down.
