Participants: Colonel Sturgis leading units of the 7th and 1st Cavalry finally caught the Nez Perce, who were being guided by the Mountain Crow, plundering Colson, MT.
The Nez Perce warriors kept the army at bay as their women and children escaped up Canyon Creek, the only route out of the Yellowstone Valley. The warriors took positions in the rocks along the canyon walls and held off the soldiers until they could make their escape to the northwest.
