Established July 4, 1877 on a bluff overlooking the confluence of the Big Horn and Little Big Horn rivers. Originally intended to control the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, the fort was abandoned on April 17, 1898 when elements of the 10th Cavalry and 24th Infantry were withdrawn.
