Fort Ellis was established on August 27, 1867 on the south bank of the East Gallatin River by Captain Robert S LaMotte. The site was selected to control the Bozeman, Bridger, and Flathead passes. It was transferred to the Department of the Interior on July 26, 1886 and later became an Experimental Station of Montana State University. It is located three miles east of Bozeman.
