Participants: The 7th Iowa Cavalry under Capt. Nicholas O'Brien were attack by about 1,000 Sioux and Cheyenne warriors.

An Indian decoy lured 38 men of 7th Iowa Cavalry under Capt. Nicholas O'Brien out of Fort Rankin.  The trap was sprung too soon and the soldiers made it back to the fort.  14 soldiers, 2 settlers, and no Indians were killed.
