After partially destroying the first fort he had built, William Bent moved five miles the Arkansas River and tried to restore his Indian trade.  Then he moved again, 40 miles down the river where he built another fort.  This stone fort became known as Bent's New Fort and he remained in business until the Civil War broke out.  In 1866 the Arkansas River began to undermine the bank and a new sandstone fort was erected 20 miles upstream.
