Fort Maginnis was established by Captain Dangerfield Park on August 22, 1880 along Ford's Creek to protect the ranchers in the area. It was abandoned on July 20, 1890 and later dismantled by the citizens of of the area. Some of the houses were rebuilt in Lewistown, about 25 miles away.
