Established by General Thomas Thoroughman and Colonel Walker De Lacy of the Montana Volunteer Militia on the mouth of Rock Creek in May 1867. The fort was established in response to the settlers in the valley who were anticipating attacks by the Crow Indians following the murder of John Bozeman a month eariler.
