Established in the fall of 1831 by James Kipp of the American Fur Company. In order to win these Indians away from the Hudson's Bay Company, Kipp gave them 200 gallons of 'Blackfoot Rum' made from a barrel of whiskey. As soon as the traders left in the spring with their haul of furs for Fort Union, the Indians burned the fort. This fort was believed to be built on a campsite of used by the Lewis and Clark expedition on June 3, 1805.
