Established in October 1842 by James P Beckwourth who was soon joined by other 'Free Trappers' and they built an adobe fort sixty yards square near the junction of the Arkansas and Fountain Rivers. On Christmas day in 1854, a band of Ute Indians attacked the post and killed every man except one and carried off the only woman and her two children.
