Established on August 12, 1866 on a bluff on the south side of the Big Horn River. This 300 square foot fort along with Fort Reno and Fort Phil Kearny was intended to safeguard the Bozeman Trail from Cheyenne and Sioux Indians. In recognition of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 the fort was abandoned.
